Júlio Machado Vaz nasceu no Porto, em 1949. Médico psiquiatra, professor universitário e autor de quase vinte livros, colabora há várias décadas com a imprensa, a rádio e a televisão. De entre os livros que publicou, destaca-se Era uma Vez um Professor; na rádio, marcou gerações com O Sexo dos Anjos; e, na televisão, ninguém esquece Sexualidades. Depois dos êxitos O Amor É, em coautoria com Inês Meneses, e À Escuta dos Amantes, Outonecer é o seu terceiro livro na Contraponto.
