Com uma infinidade de diplomas universitários, Jean Van Hamme depressa se apercebe de que, para ele, é muito mais apaixonante contar histórias do que analisar documentos contabilísticos. Decide então demitir-se das suas funções de funcionário público para experimentar viver da escrita. E consegue-o, combinando magistralmente quatro domínios: o romance, a televisão, o cinema e, é claro, a banda desenhada, onde se impõe como um dos incontestados mestres argumentistas de profissão, com séries como Western, XIII, Largo Winch e One Shots ou História sem Heróis... e Thorgal.
