Louis-Ferdinand Céline nasceu em Courbevoie, na periferia de Paris, em 1894. Entrou para o exército francês em 1912 e combateu na Primeira Guerra Mundial, onde foi ferido com gravidade. Formado em Medicina, viajou em serviço por vários países, até se fixar como médico em Paris, em 1928, data em que iniciou igualmente a sua produção literária. O seu romance de estreia, Viagem ao Fim da Noite, publicado em 1932, foi um êxito imediato e mereceu a distinção do Prémio Renaudot. Seguiu-se Morte a Crédito, em 1936, cimentando em absoluto o seu lugar de destaque nas Letras francesas. Autor ainda hoje polémico pelas suas opiniões controversas e estilo irreverente, Céline é aclamado como um dos nomes maiores da literatura mundial do século xx, tendo influenciado, entre outros, Henry Miller, Charles Bukowski ou Patrick Modiano. Morreu, vítima de aneurisma, em 1961.
