Nasceu na Amadora em 1948. Licenciou-se em História na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Viveu a guerra colonial, foi Gestor de Recursos Humanos e Diretor de Pessoal em empresas de grande e média dimensão. Colaborou em vários jornais. Recebeu vários prémios literários, nomeadamente o Prémio Literário Adolfo Simões Müller 2000 pela sua novela juvenil "O caso da mitra desaparecida". Publicou diversos livros de literatura infantojuvenil e um "Dicionário de Literatura Infantil Portuguesa". Ao nível do romance há a destacar "A malta da rua dos plátanos", com tradução em russo, e uma segunda edição, revista, editada pela Book Cover Editora, em 2019. Publicou ainda "A mulher da minha vida", "O homem do Buick azul", "O discreto cavalheiro" (Prémio Literário Orlando Gonçalves 2021), "Querubim, o filho da puta", "O regresso do primo Basílio" e "Por amor a Leonor" (Prémio Vergílio Ferreira 2024), entre outros livros. António Garcia Barreto publica ainda o blogue "Viagens por dentro dos dias".
