Professora Catedrática de Estudos Portugueses na Universidade da Califórnia, em Irvine, onde também lecciona Teoria Crítica e Women's Studies. Além de diversos estudos publicados em revistas académicas e em colecções de ensaios e da organização de números monográficos de revistas, tem publicados "Alves Redol e o Neo-Realismo Português" (Caminho, 1992) e "A Urgência de Contar: Contos de Mulheres dos Anos 40" (Caminho, 2002).
