Nasceu em 1975 em Alexandria, Piemonte. Mas sempre viveu em Calamandrana, uma pequena vila da província de Asti. Nos últimos anos tem vivido principalmente em Turim. Quando era pequeno, gostava de explorações. Por sorte, vivia numa velha casa, cheia de gavetas com ar misterioso, que podia explorar sem muito trabalho. Naquelas gavetas, encontrou muitas coisas: soldadinhos de chumbo, moedas que chegavam de sítios longínquos, mapas de países que já nem sequer existiam, cachimbos de espuma, velhas fotos com pessoas muito alegres, velhas fotos com pessoas muito tristes… Em resumo, tantos objectos que lhe pareciam ter uma história. Foi ao tentar contar essas histórias que Alessandro Gatti começou a escrever. E depois nunca mais parou, mesmo quando se acabaram as quinquilharias no fundo das gavetas.
