Excerpt: "I am bound to speak of the farmer, as I know him in the South of England. In the North he is a man of altogether higher education and breeding: but he is, even in the South, a much better man than it is the fashion to believe him. No doubt, he has given heavy cause of complaint. He was demoralised, as surely, if not as deeply, as his own labourers, by the old Poor Law. He was bewildered—to use the mildest term—by promises of Protection from men who knew better. But his worst fault after all has been, that young or old, he has copied his landlord too closely, and acted on his maxims and example. And now that his landlord is growing wiser, he is growing wiser too. Experience of the new Poor Law, and experience of Free-trade, are helping him to show himself what he always was at heart, an honest Englishman. All his brave persistence and industry, his sturdy independence and self-help, and last, but not least, his strong sense of justice, and his vast good-nature, are coming out more and more, and working better and better upon the land and the labourer; while among his sons I see many growing up brave, manly, prudent young men, with a steadily increasing knowledge of what is required of them, both as manufacturers of food, and employers of human labour."

SOBRE O AUTOR

Charles Kingsley

Charles Kingsley nasceu em 1819, numa pequena aldeia de Devon, em Inglaterra. Exerceu as profissões de padre anglicano, professor universitário, historiador e roman¬cista. Filho de um sacerdote anglicano, estudou no King’s College de Londres e na Universidade de Cambridge, onde posteriormente foi professor de História. Em 1861, foi no¬meado tutor do príncipe de Gales, futuro Eduardo VII.
Na década de 50, após ter participado nas manifestações cartistas de 1848, adere ao Movimento Socialista Cristão, onde luta por melhores condições de vida da classe tra¬balhadora. Em 1855, publica Glaucus, o primeiro livro de divulgação científica escrito para crianças. Aceita as teses evolucionistas de Darwin, de quem era amigo, não ven¬do qualquer contradição entre a religião e a ciência, ao contrário da maior parte dos clérigos da época. Em 1869, abandona a carreira universitária, tornando-se cónego da catedral de Chester, entre 1870 e 1873, e depois da abadia de Westminster. Morre em 1875, vítima de pneumonia.
Das 28 obras que publicou, destacam-se os romances históricos Hypatia (1853), Westward Ho! (1855) e Hereward the Wake (1866); a ficção de intervenção social Yeast (1848) e Alton Locke (1850); e os livros para crianças The Heroes (1856) e Os Bebés da Água (1863).
