Robert Browning

Poeta e dramaturgo inglês. Nasceu em Londres em 1812 e faleceu em Veneza em 1889. Herdando de seu pai o apego à economia e também a facilidade para a versificação, escreveu, com apenas doze anos, um volume de poesias a que chamou Incondita. Publicou uma vasta obra, de onde se destacam os poemas Paulina (o primeiro a ser publicado, em 1835), Paracelso (1835) e Sordello (1840); as peças Strafford (1837), Pippa Passes (1841) e A Dullness on Armory (1843). Sobretudo, o desenvolvimento que deu à técnica do monólogo dramático e o poema The Ring and the Book (1868-1869) garantem-lhe um lugar importante na poesia inglesa de Oitocentos. Em 1884, a Universidade de Edimburgo conferiu-lhe o título de doutor "honoris causa". Em 1886, foi nomeado membro da Royal Academy.
