John Kennedy Toole
John Kennedy Toole nasceu em 7 de Dezembro de 1937, em Nova Orleães. Suicidou-se, aos 31 anos, em 26 de Março de 1969. Sabe-se que não teve urna infância fácil, mas revelou ser um rapaz especialmente dotado - excelente aluno, talento para a música e para a escrita. Teve bolsas de estudo para frequentar as Universidades de Culane e Colambia.
Com apenas 16 anos, escreveu o seu primeiro livro - ""A Bíblia de Néon" -, que apresentou, sem êxito, a um concurso literário. E, durante os dois anos de tropa, em Porto Rico, escreveu um segundo e último romance - "Uma Conspiração de Estúpidos" - muito mais elaborado. Mas não teve melhor sorte. Começou por submetê-lo à apreciação de urna das mais importantes editoras americanas, que o recusou. E outras sete deram-lhe o mesmo destino.
A frustração que lhe foi criada por tal série de insucessos tê-lo-á levado ao suicídio. Mas quem poderia adivinhar que este seu romance viria, finalmente, a ser publicado em 1980 e, no ano seguinte, seria distinguido com o Prémio Pulitzer de Ficção?
