SOBRE O AUTOR
Jorge Luis Borges
Jorge Luis Borges nasceu em Buenos Aires, em 1899. Cresceu no bairro de Palermo, «num jardim, por detrás de uma grade com lanças, e numa biblioteca de ilimitados livros ingleses».
Em 1914 viajou com a família pela Europa, acabando por se instalar em Bruxelas, e posteriormente em Maiorca, Sevilha e Madrid. Regressado a Buenos Aires, em 1921, Borges começou a participar ativamente na vida cultural argentina.
Em 1923, publicou o seu primeiro livro — Fervor de Buenos Aires — mas o reconhecimento internacional só chegou em 1961, com o Prémio Formentor, seguido por inúmeros outros. A par da poesia, Borges escreveu ficção (é sem dúvida um dos nomes maiores do conto ou da narrativa breve), crítica e ensaio, géneros que praticou com grande originalidade e lucidez.
A sua obra é como o labirinto de uma enorme biblioteca, uma construção fantástica e metafísica que cruza todos os saberes e os grandes temas universais: o tempo, «eu e o outro», Deus, o infinito, o sonho, as literaturas perdidas, a eternidade — e os autores que deixam a sua marca.
Foi professor de literatura e dirigiu a Biblioteca Nacional de Buenos Aires entre 1955 e 1973.
Morreu em Genebra, em junho de 1986.
