Thomas Mayne Reid (1818-1883) was a Scottish-American novelist best known for his adventure novels. Born in Ballyroney, County Down, Ireland, Reid emigrated to the United States and later became a naturalized citizen. Before pursuing a career in writing, he worked variously as a clerk, soldier, and journalist.
