Anatole France

PRÉMIO NOBEL DA LITERATURA 1921

Anatole France, pseudónimo de François-Anatole Thibault (1844–1924), nasceu em Paris. Filho de um livreiro, desempenha funções na Biblioteca do Senado, ao mesmo tempo que escreve artigos de crítica e publica poesia em jornais e revistas. Em 1896, é eleito membro da Academia Francesa.
Experimenta vários géneros literários — os seus contos, Jocaste et Le Chat Maigre, de 1879, são elogiados por Flaubert —, mas é no romance que a sua vocação de escritor mais se evidencia. O seu primeiro sucesso advém com Thaïs (1890), reevocação decadente do período clássico, adaptado a libreto da ópera homónima, composta por Massenet e hoje em dia parte integrante do repertório tradicional. Seguem-se outros romances famosos, como Le Lys Rouge (1894), e quatro volumes reunidos sob o título Histoire Contemporaine (1897–1901), que marcam em definitivo a maturidade expressiva do escritor e o seu interesse por temas sociais e políticos.
Nas obras do seu último período de vida, destacam-se Vie de Jeanne d’Arc (1908), a novela alegórico-satírica L’Île des Pingouins (1908) e o romance histórico, que decorre durante a Revolução Francesa com Os Deuses Têm Sede (1912) e durante a Terceira República em A Revolta dos Anjos (1914), ambos na Cavalo de Ferro.
Escritor de refinada cultura e elegância de estilo, Anatole France esconde sob a veste de um irónico ceticismo um indulgente desencanto pela sociedade moderna. Em 1921, é-lhe atribuído o Prémio Nobel de Literatura pelo conjunto da sua obra.
