Alphonse Daudet

Alphonse Daudet (Nîmes, 1840–Paris, 1897) foi um romancista, poeta e dramaturgo francês.
Por dificuldades financeiras familiares, interrompeu os estudos no liceu de Lyon para trabalhar como vigilante de um colégio. Com a ajuda do irmão, aos 18 anos vai para Paris, dando início à sua vida literária. Tendo já publicado uma coletânea de versos (Les Amoureuses, 1858), consegue emprego no Le Figaro e como secretário do Duque de Morny, ministro de Napoleão III. Em 1862 lança um volume de contos, Le Roman du Chaperon Rouge. Torna-se íntimo de Goncourt e Emile Zola.
Em 1866, publica Lettres de Mon Moulin, que coloca Daudet como um dos grandes escritores do seu tempo.
Alistou-se e defendeu Paris (1870) durante o cerco das tropas prussianas à cidade (Guerra Franco-Prussiana), adquirindo experiência bélica. Por problemas de saúde, viajou pela Argélia, onde se inspirou para escrever Tartarin de Tarascon, em 1872.
A seguir escreveu dois romances de grande valor literário, Fromont Jeune et Risler Ainé (1873, premiado pela Academia Francesa) e Jack (1876), este o mais comovente e realista dos seus romances. Filiou-se na escola naturalista, produzindo obra variada e satírica, retratando as personagens da vida parisiense.
Morreu em 1897, depois de anos de sofrimento, causado por doença cerebral. Está sepultado no Cemitério de Père-Lachaise (Paris).
