SOBRE O AUTOR

Voltaire

François-Marie Arouet nasceu em Paris no ano de 1694 e foi registado como filho de um bem-sucedido notário parisiense, François Arouet, e da sua esposa, embora ele próprio suspeitasse ser filho da Sra. Arouet e de um poeta menor.
Após estudos num colégio jesuíta, no qual apreciou sobretudo as peças de teatro escolares, decidiu lançar-se numa carreira literária e na sociedade: uma e outra lhe valeram duas estadias na prisão da Bastilha (por uns panfletos satíricos primeiro, por uma briga com um nobre depois). Ao sair da prisão deu a si próprio o nome de Senhor de Voltaire. Foi dramaturgo, historiador, filósofo, divulgador científico, homem de negócios, membro da Academia das Ciências de França, agricultor, proprietário, investidor de capital de risco, ativista dos direitos civis e humanos, homem da corte desterrado no campo e, sobretudo, o autor mais célebre, admirado e odiado do seu tempo.
Morreu em 1778, pouco depois de regressar a Paris após um exílio de mais de vinte anos. A sua obra é extensíssima e nunca foi esgotada numa só coleção. A Voltaire Foundation, de Oxford, prevê publicá-la em 85 volumes. Cândido ou o Optimismo é considerado o seu melhor «conto filosófico» e é uma das melhores novelas da história da literatura.
