Thomas Hobbes

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) é considerado um dos filósofos ingleses mais importantes e influentes. Homem do Renascimento, educado nos mais diversos campos do saber, Hobbes distinguiu-se precisamente com Leviatã, o primeiro tratado de filosofia política a referir a necessidade de um contrato social. No entanto, a sua obra e influência foi significativa em campos tão díspares como a História, a Geometria, a Teologia, a Ética, a jurisprudência e a Filosofia em geral. Filho de um membro do clero que desprezava o conhecimento e a educação além do estritamente necessário, Thomas Hobbes teve a sorte de as circunstâncias familiares o deixarem a si e à sua família ao cuidado de um tio, um mercador abastado. Passou por diversas escolas antes de chegar à Universidade de Oxford e já antes de nela ingressar tinha traduzido a Medeia, de Eurípedes, do grego para latim. Foi tutor e secretário de uma família nobre e com um dos seus membros viajou pela Europa absorvendo diferentes conhecimentos opostos ao regime escolástico com o qual tinha convivido em Oxford. Apesar de se dar, corresponder e até mesmo trabalhar com diversas figuras importantes como Ben Jonson ou Francis Bacon, Hobbes só se dedicaria à filosofia a partir de 1629. Depois de ter feito traduções fundamentais de clássicos gregos e latinos. A sua fama como filósofo foi crescendo depois de estadas em Itália e em França a ponto de, em 1645, ter sido chamado a moderar, com Descartes e Roberval, uma disputa filosófica de impacto europeu sobre a quadratura do círculo. Hobbes passou a maior parte do período da Guerra Civil em Paris, a trabalhar como tutor e a preparar a publicação e a tradução de alguns livros, nomeadamente o Leviatã, que viu a luz do dia perto do final da guerra. Durante o período da Restauração, as suas obras foram atacadas com base em acusações de heresia, mas teve a proteção do Rei, Carlos II, que tinha sido seu pupilo, resultando daí unicamente a proibição de publicação em Inglaterra de obras de temática próxima à conduta humana. Escreveu e traduziu até ao fim da sua longa vida.
