Leibniz

Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716) doutora-se aos 19 anos em Direito e dedica grande parte da sua vida à carreira política e diplomática. Depois de conhecer Pascal, dedica-se também à matemática, e é o inventor (simultaneamente com Newton) do cálculo infinitesimal. A filosofia de Leibniz, grandemente influenciada por Descartes, é racionalista, baseia-se na existência de uma infinidade de substâncias simples, a que Leibniz atribuiu o nome de mónadas, que são ativas e não atuam umas sobre as outras. Mas como é possível a ordem do universo se as mónadas atuam por si e desligadas das restantes? A resposta de Leibniz a esta questão é a sua teoria da ordem pré-estabelecida: Deus ao criar o mundo ordenou as mónadas de tal modo que, mesmo sem existirem influências mútuas entre as mónadas, o resultado final da atividade de todas é a ordem harmónica da totalidade.
