SOBRE O AUTOR

Carlo Levi

Carlo Levi nasceu em Turim a 29 de novembro de 1902. Formado em Medicina, cedo se envolveu em lutas antifascistas, tendo sido um dos membros fundadores do grupo Justiça e Liberdade. Em 1935, foi preso e enviado para Lucânia (atual Basilicata), no sul de Itália, onde esteve confinado até 1936. Foi o registo desse período de isolamento, num local remoto e pobre, que serviu de base a Cristo Parou em Eboli, publicado originalmente em 1945. Durante este período, desenvolveu também uma série de projetos artísticos, que viria a mostrar na Bienal de Veneza de 1954. Entre as suas obras literárias, destacam-se ainda L’Orologio (1950), Le Parole Sono Pietre (1955) e Il Futuro ha un Cuore Antico (1956). Foi também deputado do senado, como membro independente do Partido Comunista, entre 1963 e 1972. Faleceu em Roma a 4 de janeiro de 1975.
