A Legal Revolution That Could Save the World. The idea that animals could be considered legal non-human persons with rights is relatively new. In April 2015, a New York judge recognized two chimpanzees as legal persons, forcing the university where they were being used for experiments to release them into the care of Save the Chimps. This book argues that two of the main underlying causes of our global environmental crisis are: the belief that humans are somehow superior to the rest of nature; and the concept of property through which we - as one species among millions - have asserted ownership of the whole planet.
