Volume 2 looks at five effects of the Civil War on African Americans in the South and in the North. These include the war's impact on black civilians, the utilization of runaway slaves in the Union Army, the end of slavery, the ramifications of freedom for blacks who had been freemen before the war, and education efforts directed toward newly freed slaves.
