December 1962, the West Country.
In the darkness of an old asylum, a young man unscrews the lid from a bottle of sleeping pills. In the nearby village, two couples begin their day. Local doctor, Eric Parry, mulling secrets, sets out on his rounds, while his pregnant wife sleeps on in the warmth of their cottage.

Andrew Miller
Andrew Miller, nascido a 29 de abril de 1960, é um romancista inglês. Nasceu em Bristol, Inglaterra. Cresceu no oeste do país e viveu em Espanha, no Japão, na Irlanda e em França.
Publicou dez romances e venceu o James Tait Black Memorial Prize, o International Dublin Literary Award, o Costa Book Award de Livro do Ano, o Winston Graham Historical Prize e o Walter Scott Prize. Foi, em 2025, finalista do Booker Prize.
Atualmente, Miller vive em Witham Friary, no Somerset, com a filha Frieda.
