Funny and Feminist

Carolina Gonçalves

There is an all-male, not-so-secret society at Frankie's school, and she wants in. It's her story. It's her quest for acceptance, recognition, friendship, and even a little social change. Frankie starts the book as a girl, but she's a young woman by the time it ends. That's why this book is a lot more character-centered than plot-centered. It's all about Frankie's growth. There are many sides to her. Like any other girl, she is a thousand things at once. Some are qualities, and some are flaws. She's not a perfect heroine, and that's why she's a great one. The people around her get amazing character development as well. They all are more than the first impression that so often makes us assume too much about people. Here, even side characters live up to be more than their roles. They have their own desires, motivations, and fears. They are not set-decorations, exposition or plot points. They are real characters. The writing that brings them to life is both clever and funny. The story flows so perfectly and seamlessly that you lose yourself in it. It shows a true love of words that a bookworm will recognize and cherish. This is a YA novel, but I recommend it to everyone. It makes some great points on growth, feminism, society, and the English language.
