The Classic French Cinema, 1930-60

An exploration of French cinema from the introduction of sound to the beginning of the New Wave. The author re-evaluates the stylistic evolution of the classic cinema, and re-presents the New Wave film-makers as its natural heirs rather than the mould-breakers they perceived themselves to be.
