Margaret never really meant to start a book club . . . or a feminist revolution, for that matter in this bold and plucky novel from New York Times bestselling author Marie Bostwick.

I want my own Bettys!

Rita Gordo

4,5 ¿ I received an ARC for The Book Club for Troublesome Women when it first came out, but life got in the way and I only picked it up now, BUT I am so glad I did, because this story is brilliant! I adored this book. Truly. I love these women. I love stories where characters grow, evolve, and find themselves not in isolation, but together. This is one of my favorite book club novels about women, and I am taking the Bettys with me for life. At the heart of this story is The Feminine Mystique, and while it takes center stage, it never overshadows the novel’s own purpose. Instead, it sharpens it. The book brings attention to the suffocating expectations placed on women, the idea that femininity is defined by wombs, kitchens, and quiet obedience, useful only insofar as it serves husbands and, perhaps, children. Reading this through the lens of community, friendship, and shared awakening makes it hit even harder. What Marie Bostwick does beautifully is show how ideas change people slowly, imperfectly, and collectively. These women are not suddenly transformed. They question, resist, falter, and grow. Together. AND ALL THIS BACK IN 1960. My only small criticism is that I wanted more discussion of the books themselves. More debate, more reflection on how the reading shaped their thoughts and decisions. I wanted the book club to feel even more like a book club. I know there's some criticism about the length of the book, but I wouldn't have minded a few more pages just for this purpose. Still, this is a warm, intelligent, and deeply affirming novel about friendship, womanhood, and the quiet power of shared stories. One that lingers long after the last page. I want my own Bettys!
