SINOPSE
On Boxing Day 2022, in Rome, Hanif Kureishi had a fall. When he came to, in a pool of blood, he was horrified to realise he had lost the use of his limbs.
He could no longer walk, write or wash himself. He could do nothing without the help of others, and required constant care in a hospital. So began an odyssey of a year through the medical systems of Rome and Italy, with the hope of somehow being able to return home, to his house in London.
While confined to a series of hospital wards, he felt compelled to write, but being unable to type or to hold a pen, he began to dictate to family members the words which formed in his head. The result was an extraordinary series of dispatches from his hospital bed – a diary of a life in pieces, recorded with rare honesty, clarity and courage.
This book takes these hospital dispatches – edited, expanded and meticulously interwoven with new writing – and charts both a shattering and a reassembling: a new life born of pain and loss, but animated by new feelings – of gratitude, humility and love.

SOBRE O AUTOR
Hanif Kureishi
Hanif Kureishi nasceu e foi criado em Kent. Leu filosofia no King's College, em Londres. Em 1981, ganhou o prémio George Devine com as suas peças Outskirtsand Borderline e, em 1982, foi nomeado escritor residente no Royal Court Theatre. Em 1984, escreveu My Beautiful Laundrette, que recebeu uma indicação ao Oscar de Melhor Argumento. O seu segundo argumento, Sammyand Rosie Get Laid (1987), foi seguido por London Kills Me (1991), que ele também dirigiu. O Buddha of Suburbia ganhou o Prémio Whitbread de Melhor Primeira Novela em 1990 e foi transformado numa série de drama em quatro partes pela BBC em 1993. A sua versão da Mother Courage de Brecht foi produzida pela Royal Shakespeare Company e pelo Royal National Theatre. O seu segundo romance, The Black Album, foi publicado em 1995. Com Jon Savage, editou The Faber Book of Pop (1995).
A sua primeira coleção de contos, Love in a Blue Time, foi publicada em 1997. A sua história My Son the Fanatic, dessa coleção, foi adaptada para cinema e lançada em 1998. Intimacy, o seu terceiro romance, foi publicado em 1998 e um filme com o mesmo título, baseado no romance e em outras histórias do autor, foi lançado em 2001 e ganhou o prémio Urso de Ouro no Festival de Berlim. A sua peça Sleep With Me estreou no Royal National Theatre em 1999. A sua segunda coleção de histórias, Midnight All Day, foi publicada em 2000. Gabriel's Gift, o seu quarto romance, foi publicado em 2001. The Body and Seven Stories and Dreaming and Scheming, uma coleção de ensaios, foram publicados em 2002.
O seu argumento, The Mother, foi dirigido por Roger Michell e lançado em 2003. Em 2004, publicou a peça When The Night Begins e um livro de memórias, My Ear At His Heart. Uma segunda coleção de ensaios, The Word and the Bomb, seguiu-se em 2005. O argumento Venus foi dirigido por Roger Michell em 2006. O romance Something to Tell You foi publicado em 2008.
Em julho de 2009, a adaptação do seu romance, The Black Album, estreou no National Theatre, antes de uma tourné nacional. Em 2010, as suas histórias coletadas foram publicadas.
Foi condecorado Cavaleiro da Ordem das Artes e Letras.
