In the darkening embers of a Communist utopia, life in a desolate Hungarian town has come to a virtual standstill. Flies buzz, spiders weave, water drips and animals root desultorily in the barnyard of a collective farm.

But when the charismatic Irimias - long-thought dead - returns, the villagers fall under his spell. Irimias sets about swindling the villagers out of a fortune that might allow them to escape the emptiness and futility of their existence. He soon attains a messianic aura as he plays on the fears of the townsfolk and a series of increasingly brutal events unfold.

László Krasznahorkai (Gyula, 1954), «mestre húngaro do Apocalipse», segundo Susan Sontag, e «autor intenso e intransigente», segundo W. G. Sebald, é autor de uma obra visionária, traduzida em quarenta línguas, constituída por romances, como O Tango de Satanás (1985), Az ellenállás melankóliája [Melancolia da Resistência] (1989), Háború és háború [Guerra e Guerra] (1991) ou Herscht 07769 (2021), ficção breve, ensaios e guiões que resultaram em adaptações cinematográficas por Béla Tarr. Foi distinguido com inúmeros prémios literários, nos quais se incluem o America Award in Literature em 2014, o Man Booker International Prize em 2015, o Prémio Kossuth, o National Book Award for Translated Literature em 2019, o Austrian State Prize em 2022 e o Prix Formentor em 2024.
Recebeu o Prémio Nobel de Literatura 2025 pela sua «obra envolvente e visionária que, no meio do terror apocalíptico, reafirma o poder da arte. É um grande escritor épico, na tradição centro-europeia que se estende de Kafka a Thomas Bernhard».
