El presente documento examina el proceso de ampliación de la Unión Europea desde sus inicios hasta la actualidad. Se revisan las cuatro principales rondas de ampliación (1973, 1981-86, 1995, y 2004-2013) y se explora el continuo debate entre profundización y ampliación, destacando la importancia de las reformas previas en cada fase. Además, se abordan eventos clave como el Congreso de Europa en 1948 y la Declaración Schuman de 1950, que sentaron las bases del proyecto europeo. Finalmente, se analiza el contexto actual tras las elecciones al Parlamento Europeo de 2024, y se discute la necesidad de una reforma federal en profundidad, tal como lo sugieren recientes informes, para afrontar nuevas ampliaciones y asegurar la competitividad frente a potencias globales como Estados Unidos y China.This research examines the process of the European Union's enlargement from its origins Número 144 / 2024 to the present day. It reviews the four major rounds of enlargement (1973, 1981-86, 1995, and 2004-2013) and explores the ongoing debate between deepening and enlargement, highlighting the importance of prior reforms in each phase.
