This collection of select articles and commentaries on northeastern India focuses primarily on issues relating to the emergence of ethnic nationalism, identity movements, the rise of militant separatism and the role of civil society in conflict situations. The complex processes of nationality formation, the conflicts and contradictions besetting the different ethnic struggles, the engagement of the nation-state with the autonomy/independentist demands raised bythe small nationalities and the inherent fault lines in the quest for separate homelands in a highly diverse and heterogeneous situation-these and many other issues figure prominently in this volume.
