19th century men and women had few opportunities to socialize with those from other regions of the US. The resorts of Virginia's western mountains and upstate New York's Saratoga Springs provided a rare meeting ground, one where the boundaries of class and region were defined, tested, broken, and repaired by the Civil War and its aftermath.
