Coptic Egypt

Legend attributes the foundation of the first Coptic church to St Mark in Alexandria in the 1st century AD, when Egypt was under Roman rule. Although it became a Muslim nation, the Copts maintained their religious and artistic traditions throughout the Nile valley, the delta and the Mediterranean.
