A great book! The authors synthesize for educational purposes many results of their own historical research into the early centuries of Portuguese presence in central-western Africa and their interaction with local cultures. They contextualize in time, also, the Dutch and British interventions in this interaction, providing a rigorous, deep, and at the same time passionate reading. After decades of pro and anti-colonial propaganda, I believe that the Angolan, Portuguese and Brazilian people are tired of propaganda concerning their own past and would love reading this book in their own Portuguese language, perhaps only with the title modified to something more suggestive for these peoples.
