Examining historical depictions of Beethoven's work in late eighteenth-century, this book also looks critically at traditional assumptions. It discusses two of Beethoven's most beloved piano sonatas, and identifies a potential borrowing in the "Fifth Symphony". It also shows how Romantic composers trod the path between emulation and originality.
