S. F. Williamson sente fascínio pela forma como as línguas nascem e envolveu-se nelas muito antes de obter diplomas em francês e italiano. Sempre entendeu as línguas como criaturas vivas, que se movem e respiram, e aprendeu desde criança que falar diferentes idiomas permite aceder a ideias, tradições e pessoas que, de outra forma, permaneceriam distantes.

A Linguagem dos Dragões é inspirado no seu trabalho como tradutora literária e no facto de, por mais que um linguista conheça profundamente um idioma, haver sempre algo que se perde na tradução.
