 This book aims to revise the history of Dutch world trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. While studies of Dutch economic expansion tend to focus on the East India Company and its Asian empire, activities in the Atlantic have been neglected. Consequently, their importance has been seriously underestimated. By examining the transit trade in the Caribbean, this thorough and original study presents an alternative view of the Dutch seaborne empire, facing east as well as west. The Dutch transit trade in the Caribbean revolved around Curacao and St. Eustatius, small islands that did not have much in common with other colonies in the region. Sugar and tobacco production in St. Eustatius was never a prosperous enterprise and Curacao proved to be unsuited for the cultivation of cash crops. But enterprising merchants turned these Dutch possessions into entrepots,local counterparts of Amsterdam, from where a wide variety of European commodities was sent to foreign colonies in exchange for tropical produce. Although outlawed by French, English, and Spanish mercantilist policies, inter-imperial commerce became a booming business, providing the Dutch in the New World with a niche which was much more profitable than historians have realized. The Caribbean contraband trade thus helped the Dutch to survive the loss in the mid-seventeenth century of most of their territorial empire in the Western hemisphere.

 Thanks to Renzo Duin's annotated translation, the voice of Lodewijk Schmidt-an Afrodiasporic Saramaka Maroon from Suriname-is finally available for Anglophone audiences worldwide. More than anything else, Schmidt's journals constitute meticulous ethnographic accounts telling the tragic story of the Indigenous Peoples of the Eastern Guiana Highlands (northern Brazil and southern French Guiana and Suriname). Schmidt's is a story that takes account of the pathological mechanisms of colonialism in which Indigenous Peoples and African Diaspora communities-both victims of colonialism-vilify each other, falling privy to the divide-and-conquer mentality mechanisms of colonialism. Moreover, silenced in the original 1942 publication, Schmidt was sent on a covert mission to determine if the Nazis had established bases and airfields at the southern border of Suriname. Schmidt described the precariousness of the Amazonian forest and the Indigenous Peoples and African Diasporic people who lived and continue to live there, drawing on language that foreshadows our current anthropic and ecological concerns. Duin's profound knowledge of the history, geography, and ecology of the region contextualizes Schmidt's accounts in a new introduction and in his analysis and afterthought forces us to take account of the catastrophe that is deforestation and ethnocide of the Indigenous Peoples of Amazonian Guiana. Lodewijk J. Schmidt (1898-1992) Saramaka from Gansee (modern Saamaka spelling: Ganze; pronounced Ganze), upper Suriname river, Suriname, South America. The Saramaka are one of the largest African Diaspora communities in Suriname. He was educated by the Herrnhutters in the school of the Moravian Church, and during the mid-twentieth century he took part in several momentous expeditions, such as the 1935-38 Border Expedition between Suriname and Brazil. The present work is the annotated translation of his accounts of a tri-partite expedition conducted between 1940 and 1942 at and across the southern border of Suriname. Renzo S. Duin (1974) obtained a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Florida (USA). Between 1996 and 2019 he conducted over 40 months of fieldwork in the Guianas (Suriname, French Guiana, and Guyana). His research and publications cover a broad range of topics: socio-political landscape studies; material culture; intangible heritage; social memory; oral history; identity; ethno-astronomy; historical ecology; decolonization; and the intertwining nature of these topics, and as such offers an alternative to the twentieth century model of tropical forest cultures in Amazonia.

Een Leven In De West - Van Raders En Zijn Werkzaamheden Op Curacao

 Bij het herstel van het Nederlandse gezag over de kolonie Curacao in 1816, kwam een nieuw garnizoen van meer dan 350 militairen uit Europa op Curacao aan. Een van de officieren was de twintigjarige kapitein R.F. van Raders. Bijna dertig jaar lang bleef hij werkzaam op het eiland: eerst als garnizoensofficier, daarna als adjudant van de gouverneur en vervolgens als garnizoenscommandant. Hoewel tegenslagen en tegenwerking de uitvoering van zijn plannen van meet a aan vergezelden, bleef de gezaghebber overtuigd van de juistheid van zijn inzichten. Tot dusver onderbelichte onderwerpen in de West-Indische geschiedschrijving komen in Een leven in de West; Van Raders en zijn werkzaamheden op Curacao aan bod. Voor het eerst wordt het leven en de maatschappelijke positie van garnizoensmilitairen op Curacao beschreven. Wim Renkema heeft diepgaand onderzoek verricht in overheidsarchieven, wat geleid heeft tot nieuwe vondsten, bijvoorbeeld over de wijze waarop Van Raders het streven naar gelijkberechtiging van de rooms-katholieke bevolkingsgroep steunde. Creole Jews - Negotiating Community In Colonial Suriname

 This study presents a refined analysis of Surinames-Jewish identifications. The story of the Surinamese Jews is one of a colonial Jewish community that became ever more interwoven with the local environment of Suriname. Ever since their first settlement, Jewish migrants from diverse backgrounds, each with their own narrative of migration and settlement, were faced with challenges brought about by this new environment; a colonial order and, in essence, a race-based slave society. A place, furthermore, that was constantly changing: economically, socially, demographically, politically and culturally.Against this background, the Jewish community transformed from a migrant community into a settlers' community. Both the Portuguese and High German Jews adopted Paramaribo as their principal place of residence from the late eighteenth century onwards. Radical economic changes-most notably the decline of the Portuguese-Jewish planters' class-not only influenced the economic wealth of the Surinamese Jews as a group, but also had considerable impact on their social status in Suriname's society.The story of the Surinamese Jews is a prime example of the many ways in which a colonial environment and diasporic connections put their stamp on everyday life and affected the demarcation of community boundaries and group identifications. The Surinamese-Jewish community debated, contested and negotiated the pillars of a Surinamese-Jewish group identity not only among themselves but also with the colonial authorities.This book is based on the author's dissertation.

Het sluiten van de vrede tussen overheid en Okanisi was de erkenning van de eerste 'zwarte vrijstaat' in Suriname. De geschiedenis van de Okanisi is geschreven op basis van uniek materiaal. Dat materiaal bestaat uit verslagen van de koloniale oorlog tegen de Marrons en uit mondelinge overleveringen van de Okanisi. Een zwarte vrijstaat toont overtuigend aan dat in het verleden het heden ligt.
