Agentivity In Human Impersonal Constructions In Polish And Russian

 This book presents a synchronic study on the applicability and the acceptability of the passive and three impersonal constructions in Polish (-no/-to, reflexive, and 3pl) and Russian (3pl construction) that were contrasted with a regular active construction. The constructions show different degrees of applicability with different verbs independent of the animacy of the demoted subject. The main idea pursued in this book is that the grammaticality of the relevant constructions depends on the degree of agentivity of the implicit subject entailed by the verb. For the description of the verb semantics Dowtys proto-role model (1991) is used, which operates by summing up the proto-agent, and the proto-patient entailments to determine how much agent-like or patient-like a semantic role is.

 The given volume provides insight into the integrated cooperation that was built in the trilateral scientific project "Aggression and Argumentation. Discourses of Conflict and their Linguistic Negotiation". Presented here are analyses of the relationship of language and power, the interplay of aggression and argumentation, as well as of cooperation and conflict. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict is an important, but not the only starting point for the analytical reflections, that are enriched through research on further conflict situations in Eastern European and (post)socialist areas like former Yugoslavia, the South Caucasus, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Studies On Evidentiality Marking In West And South Slavic

 The present volume assembles six studies on the marking of evidential functions in Serbian (J. udomirovi, Lj. Popovi), Slovak (M. Ivanová) and Polish (A. Socka, P. Yildiz, B. Wiemer); four of them (plus an Introduction) are written in English, with a further article in Russian and German, respectively. The focus for the West Slavic languages is on sentential adverbs and so-called function words (particles, complementizers, etc.; M. Ivanová, A. Socka, P. Yildiz, B. Wiemer), as well as on the roots of evidential marking appearing in clause-combining with perception or seem-verbs in Polish (P. Yildiz) or Serbian (J. udomirovi), for which different degrees of conventionalization are discussed. One article, however, additionally targets evidential extensions of past tense paradigms in Serbian (Lj. Popovi), for which an analysis of a questionnaire survey is presented. All articles, with one exception, take a synchronic view of the aforementioned contemporary languages, mostly on the basis of corpus data. One study deals with early, "pre-evidential" stages in the development of the Polish comparison marker jakoby 'as if' (B. Wiemer). The interaction with, and relation to, epistemic meanings is accounted for in all the studies, but it is specifically focused on in two papers on Polish (P. Yildiz, B. Wiemer). A third paper on Polish (A. Socka) arrives at new conclusions concerning 'distance' from a discourse perspective, partially conventionalized in the lexical meaning of reportive sentence adverbs (or particles).
