Coiffures Et Parures De Tete En Egee A L'Age Du Bronze

 Les coiffures et les parures de tete, en tant qu''elements forts de communication, permettent d''aborder des champs d''investigation sur l''appartenance culturelle et identitaire de leurs porteurs. Cette recherche, a travers ce nouvel angle d''approche, vise a eclairer la place et le role de la chevelure et des coiffes dans les civilisations egeennes de l''Age du Bronze. L''etude se fonde principalement sur deux types de sources complementaires : les sources directes (bandeaux metalliques) et les sources indirectes (iconographie). La demarche conduit a proposer une nouvelle typologie morpho-stylistique des coiffures et parures de tete visibles dans l''iconographie. Ces diverses representations montrent que certaines coiffures et parures de tete sont des marqueurs sexuels, chrono-culturels et sociaux. Grace a un double examen visuel (observation macroscopique et microscopique) des bandeaux metalliques, on peut reconstituer leur chaine operatoire. L''etude met en evidence des differences techniques (fabrication et decoration) et des traces d''usure intimement liees aux contextes chrono-culturels. La recherche tend egalement a montrer que le bandeau devait etre porte en association avec un tissu. Par l''etude des traces immaterielles et grace a la mobilisation de diverses sources (iconographiques, archeologiques, textuelles et comparatives), on a tente d''apprehender les outils et la gestuelle associes au traitement de la chevelure, mais aussi les materiaux pouvant composer les parures de tete representees en iconographie. Des reconstitutions du port du bandeau ont enfin montre le vaste champ de possibilites du port de cet artefact.

 To honor the memory of the father of Aegean archaeology and celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth, the best way was undoubtedly to show the advances that have been made over the last hundred and fifty years of excavations at the sites Heinrich Schliemann first explored, as well as on other sites he just visited, in Italy - including Sardinia - and in Greece - Therasia in the Santorini caldera -, keeping in mind that these first steps he took also mark the very beginnings of Aegean archaeology. The 19th International Aegean Conference / 19e Rencontre egeenne internationale focused therefore on evaluating - albeit very partially - the results of the extensive fieldwork conducted by so many teams at Troy, Mycenae, Tiryns, and Orchomenos, walking in the footsteps of the pioneer. To fully appreciate the progress made since Schliemann''s explorations, various aspects were considered, such as topography and environment, architecture, artistic and craft production, social organization, religious beliefs and practices, means of subsistence and sources of supply, as well as echoes in later textual sources. The latter approach was fundamental in Schliemann''s thinking and methodology. It is first addressed in the keynote lecture and then discussed, in the same perspective of appraising the evolution and achievements of scientific research during a century and a half. The Centro Internazionale per la Ricerca sulle Civilta Egee, in Oristano, Sardinia, where the conference took place is dedicated to the late Pierre Carlier, who devoted an important part of his career and research to the evocations of Aegean material testimonies in later textual sources. The IXNH conference also pays tribute to him.

Mycenaean Collection Of Ivory Combs At The National Archaeological Museum, Athens

 Ivory combs of the Late Bronze Age Aegean have not gained the proper attention so far, despite the fact that they belong, together with the pins and pyxis fashioned by the same material, to prestigious toiletry sets documented in the wider area of the Eastern Mediterranean. Although they never became an indispensable accessory for the Mycenaeans, ivory combs indicate prosperity and high status for the male and female burials they furnished, from the exquisite gold-sheathed specimens of Grave Circle A at Mycenae to the later simple ones of the warrior burials in Achaea. The corpus of the 83 Mycenaean combs held at the National Archaeological Museum is the largest of the kind, with specimens covering almost all the Peloponnese and part of Attica, ranging in date from Late Helladic I to Late Helladic IIIC. Aspects of their technology, typology, iconography, context and social significance discussed in the volume, are expected to shed light on yet another important class of Mycenaean craftsmanship.

 The 18th International Aegean Conference on the subject of Zoia (literally ''creatures endowed with an anima or life force'') was conceived and organized by Robert Laffineur and Tom Palaima, director of the Program in Aegean Scripts and Prehistory (PASP) in the Department of Classics at The University of Texas at Austin, marking 30 years of their collaboration on Aegaeum volumes and conferences. In the event, Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the conference proper. This volume, however, testifies to the dedication of Aegeanist scholars worldwide to accomplish the scholarly objectives of the proposed conference: to examine, from a wide range of specialist research perspectives, how the human societies that developed in the Aegean area in the Middle and Late Bronze Age and the human beings within them interacted with wild, domesticated and semi-domesticated animals of the sea, sky and land socio-politically, economically, religiously, ideologically, imaginatively and artistically. Diamantis Panagiotopoulos stresses in his keynote paper that the 28 papers in Zoia reflect "the dynamic development of Human-Animal Studies" in the last two decades. Papers are grouped under five main topics: identification of the animal environment; human uses of domesticated and wild animals, material economy, diet and society; hybrid and fantastic creatures in animal iconography (seals, frescoes and other forms of representation); animals in beliefs and religion (their contemporary symbolic uses and later uses as relics or heirlooms); and animals in texts (Indo-European and non-Indo-European; Cretan Pictographic, Linear A, Linear B and later Homeric and historical Greek). The results are comprehensive, eclectic, scientifically informative and intellectually provocative. They help us see protohistoric Aegean cultures as the non-human animals inextricably linked to them saw them.

Troubled Island - Minoan Crete Before And After The Santorini Eruption

 Our thesis is that the archaeological evidence suggests a severe economic dislocation during the Late Minoan IB ceramic period in Crete. This appears to have been triggered, first by a tectonic earthquake and shortly afterwards by the eruption of Thera early in the Late Bronze Age (Late Minoan IA) after which the situation gradually worsened, accompanied by a general feeling of uncertainty caused by the eruption and its effects. The tectonic earthquake led to abandonments at some sites or an effort to rebuild in attempt to re-establish normal economic and social life. The result of these two natural disasters gave local centers greater independence from the traditional "Palaces". This fragmentation of Minoan Crete brought about the end of the most highly developed economic system in the Aegean although it was somewhat resurrected in the following "Mycenaean" period. The natural events which proved to be the catalysts for change, presaged the end of the traditional ruling elites which appeared to have lost their assumed divine support. They tried in vain to maintain their special status, but with major problems in food production and distribution, the existing system disintegrated resulting in a process of decentralisation with an increase in the regional exploitation of land chiefly for local consumption; numerous lesser elites may well have prospered in this environment. However, as in the Hellenistic period, the fragmentation of Crete into many small centres may have led to internal Cretan conflict and a massive wave of fire destructions in Late Minoan IB, indicating a state of anarchy by the end of the period. That Mycenaeans from Mainland Greece arrived on the island at some stage during the Late Bronze Age is clear, although precisely when they arrived is a matter of fierce debate. The "crisis years" of LM IB-II, in the fifteenth century B.C., appear the most likely and opportune. During the succeeding "Mycenaean" period, only the Palace at Knossos seems to have functioned as a major centre. During LM II-III, there was a gradual but general decrease in the sophistication of architecture and arts. The LM II period may perhaps be regarded as the final phase of decline which began in LM IB, with some major centres suffering destructions once again. By Late Minoan II, a new Knossian elite or dynasty appears to have taken control and installed a modified socio-political and economic system. The dynasty relied heavily on administration and bureaucraty to maintain its position. The Santorini eruption is here given the role of a precipitant or catalyst, which began an entire series of changes which eventually resulted in the absorption of Minoan Crete into the Mycenaean, and ultimately, the Greek world.

Neoteros - Studies In Bronze Age Aegean Art And Archaeology In Honor Of Professor John G. Younger On The Occasion Of His Retirement

Younger rapidly extended his expertise into prehistoric (Bronze Age) Aegean archaeology, art and architecture, with a particular focus on ancient stone-working... and from this interest came his seminal studies on the iconography of Bronze Age Aegean stone seals, a field on which he has made an indelible mark. He also branched out into Jewish Studies, becoming an expert on early synagogues. His lifelong activism for LGBTQI+ and minority rights, and his early embrace of feminism and the crucial role that women have played in the past (not just in archaeology, but in the ancient world itself) have also informed his teaching and studies regarding ancient and modern notions about gender and sexuality, and these studies have greatly enriched our views of the ancient world, while going a long way toward counteracting the persistently male-centric interpretations of the ancient world characteristic of the past few centuries. He has been a pioneer in the establishment of LGBTQI+ academic programs in the U.S., and in the integration of modern technologies (especially computers) into Classics and archaeology. He has established himself as an international authority on Linear A, the undeciphered writing system of the Minoans; his website containing the corpus of that script is second to none in terms of its value to scholars working on Linear A. His recent and continuing investigations into the identification of prehistoric Aegean myths promises to add yet another facet to what is already a brilliant diamond of a career.

 The 17th International Aegean Conference / Rencontre genne internationale MNEME was organised by the University of Udine, Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage, and the Ca'' Foscari University of Venice, Department of Humanities, starting from the many suggestions given by several studies which have been recently devoted to the perception of and confrontation with the past in ancient societies as well as to the manifold practices of memory including memorializing and memory keeping. Scholars have focused on the important function of social memory for the construction of collective identities including ethnicity. Construction, re-use and manipulation of the past have been identified in several contexts as ideological strategies favouring cultural continuity. On the one hand, well-defined chronological limits have been reconsidered following the evidence of long-term dynamics based on the reproduction of relevant social practices through space and time. On the other hand, phenomena of cultural discontinuity and innovation have also resulted in being profoundly connected to the approach that ancient communities had towards their past, which they variously expressed in monumental architecture, funerary layout, iconographic and stylistic traditions and social practices in both ceremonial and domestic contexts. Furthermore, fragmentation, sacrifice or storage of material culture and economic resources - phenomena relevant to different systems of political economy - are in turn strongly connected to the practice of memory, with an impact on the cultural landscape including settlement as well as funerary domains.

Cultic Life Of Trees In The Prehistoric Aegean, Levant, Egypt And Cyprus

 This research examines 44 images of Minoan tree cult as depicted in sphragistic jewellery, portable objects and wall paintings from Late Bronze Age Crete, mainland Greece and the Cyclades. The study also compares the Aegean images with evidence for sacred trees in the Middle and Late Bronze Age Levant, Egypt and Cyprus. The purpose of this investigation is the production of new interpretations of Minoan images of tree cult. Each of the chapters of the book looks at both archaeological and iconographic evidence for tree cult. The Aegean material is, in addition, examined more deeply through the lenses of modified Lacanian psychoanalytic modelling, "new" animism, ethnographic analogy, and a Neo-Marxist hermeneutics of suspicion. It is determined that Minoan images of tree cult depict elite figures performing their intimate association with the numinous landscape through the communicative method of envisioned and enacted epiphanic ritual. The tree in such images is a physiomorphic representation of a goddess type known in the wider eastern Mediterranean associated with effective rulership and with the additional qualities of fertility, nurturance, protection, regeneration, order and stability. The representation of this deity by elite human females in ritual performance functioned to enhance their selfrepresentation as divinities and thus legitimise and concretise the position of elites within the hegemonic structure of Neopalatial Crete. These ideological visual messages were circulated to a wider audience through the reproduction and dispersal characteristic of the sphragistic process, resulting in Minoan elites literally stamping their authority on to the Cretan landscape and hence society.

Ariadne'S Threads - The Construction And Significance Of Clothes In The Aegean Bronze Age

 This book is the first to deal comprehensively with the construction, significance, and function of the full range of garments of Aegean women and related attire of men from the Neolithic to the end of the Bronze Age. As valuable as precious metals, a significant commodity of trade, luxurious in design and decoration, Minoan dress rivaled that of its Near Eastern and Egyptian neighbors. Yet, Aegean costumes and textiles have been among the least understood of the major artistic achievements of the Minoan civilization. Since ancient Aegean textiles and garments have not survived, the study collects, analyzes and compiles a typology of the corpus of garments represented in sculpture, frescoes and glyptic to glean evidence for construction. It further considers the manufacturing techniques of extant Egyptian clothes, comparable images of ancient Near Eastern garments, textile manufacture on the warp-weighted loom, and dress documented in Mycenaean Linear B, Greek and Near Eastern texts. The combined evidence is buttressed by experiments in replicating Aegean and related Near Eastern garments as well as the weave structures of patterned cloths and bands. The replicated clothes are arranged on live models who assume the various positions of the clothed figures in the frescoes and sculptures they imitate, thereby bringing the ancient figures to life. This all inclusive study not only illuminates every aspect of Aegean costume, but the resultant understanding of dress and the way it drapes on the body has led to new restorations of the missing parts of fragmentary garments on figural sculptures and wall paintings.
