ABOUT THE ARTIST

Césaria Evora

Cesária Évora, born in 1941 in Mindelo, Cape Verde, was one of the greatest interpreters of Lusophone music and became known worldwide as the "barefoot diva", a nickname that symbolized her simplicity and connection to the people. With her deep and melancholic voice, she became an ambassador of the morna genre, bringing the soul of Cape Verdean music to the world.

Raised in a humble environment, she began singing in bars and fado houses in Mindelo, interpreting mornas and coladeras that spoke of love, longing and the harshness of Cape Verdean life. For years, her career was limited to the local circuit, until, in the 1980s, she was discovered by European producers who recognized her unique talent.

The album La Diva aux Pieds Nus (1988) marked the beginning of international projection, but it was with Miss Perfumado (1992) that Cesária Évora became a world star. Songs like "Sodade" have become universal anthems of melancholy and belonging, conquering audiences far beyond Cape Verde's borders.

In the following years, he released albums such as Cesária (1995), Café Atlântico (1999) and Voz d'Amor (2003), the latter a Grammy winner. Her unmistakable voice, capable of transmitting tenderness and pain in every syllable, has established her as one of the greatest interpreters of global music.

Live, she always sang barefoot, a gesture she said was in solidarity with the poor of her country. This simplicity, combined with her natural charisma, made her an unforgettable figure for all who saw her on stage.

Cesária Évora passed away in 2011, but she left an immense legacy: she transformed morna into a world heritage site and gave Cape Verde an eternal voice on the musical map of the world.

Today, she is remembered as one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century, a symbol of authenticity, emotion and the universality of Cape Verdean music.
