ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Alfred Jarry

He was born in Laval, Mayenne, France. Precocious and cultured, creative and eccentric, Alfred Jarry was only 15 years old when, together with high school classmates, he wrote the play "King Ubu", which premiered in Paris in 1896, causing great scandal. "Despite the reactions, «Rei Ubu» had sequels: «Ubu Cornudo», «Ubu no Outeiro» and «Ubu Agrilhoado» but none were performed in the lifetime of the playwright, who died at the age of 34 victim of tuberculous meningitis. Despite his early death, his work, which is not limited to the Ubu cycle, decisively influenced the Surrealist and Dada movements, creating a kind of pseudoscience, Pataphysics or the «science of imaginary solutions». Jarry opened new avenues for modern theater, becoming a pioneer of Absurd Theater." (in Magazine Artes, April 2005)
