ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nancy Mitford

Nancy Mitford was born in London in 1904 into an aristocratic family. A prose writer of rare elegance and wit, the most famous of the famous Mitford sisters (the "mad, mad Mitfords," as they were known at the time) who scandalized British society in the 1930s and 40s and maintained contact with people like Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler, Nancy Mitford describes the lives of the English and French upper classes in a period preceding and following the Second World War; a universe of cold manor houses, nobles, feuding lords, existences governed by the calendar of hunts and debuts, marriages for life and short-lived romances.
She, once considered the Jane Austen of the 20th century, a socialist in a family that supported the British Union of Fascists, died in 1973 in Versailles. Today she is a cult author.
