The Romanesque church of São Pedro de Rates has been deserving of attention from great national and foreign historians throughout the previous century, for its architectural peculiarities and decorative richness. In the 20th century, the monument underwent a daring restoration project and is, nowadays, a reference of considerable importance for the History of European Art.In broad terms, the present study deals with the enshrinement of the figure of S. Pedro de Rates as the first bishop of Braga; analyzes the great contributions of the historiography regarding the monument; the restoration carried out by the General-Directorate of the National Buildings and Monuments (DGEMN) during Estado Novo; and the current challenges, according to a modern policy of Integrated Management of Artistic Heritage.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Maria João Neto

Maria João Neto é Professora Associada com Agregação no Instituto de História da Arte da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Licenciou-se em História da Arte na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa em 1985. Concluiu o Mestrado, na mesma Faculdade, em 1990, com a apresentação de uma tese sobre O Restauro do Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória de 1840 a 1900. Doutorou-se em 1996 com uma tese intitulada A Direção-Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais e a Intervenção no Património Arquitectónico em Portugal (1929-1960). Tem desenvolvido os seus estudos e projetos de investigação nacionais e internacionais, bem como a orientação de teses, nas áreas de História da Arte Contemporânea, História e Teoria do Restauro Arquitetónico, Gestão Integrada do Património Artístico e História do Colecionismo e Mercados da Arte. Atualmente é diretora do ARTIS - Instituto da História da Arte da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa.
