ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Claude Lévi-Strauss

Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009) studied philosophy and law at the University of Paris. Between 1934 and 1937 he was a professor of sociology at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. In 1939 he traveled to the states of Mato Grosso and Amazonas, where he studied indigenous tribes. Between 1941 and 1945, he was a professor at the New School for Social Research in New York. Director of the École Pratique des Hautes Études at the University of Paris between 1950 and 1974, he held the chair of social anthropology at the Collège de France between 1959 and 1982, and was elected a member of the French Academy in 1973. Among his works, the following stand out: Les Structures élémentaires de la parenté (1949), Sad Tropics (1955), Mythological (1964-1971), Structural Anthropology (1961 and 1973), The Wild Mind (1962), Totemism, today (1962), The Way of the Masks (1975), The Distant Gaze (1983) and Look Listen Read (1993).
