Luís de Camões

Portuguese poet (1524-1580) par excellence and one of the great names of European literature of the Renaissance. Little or nothing is known about his family, childhood and youth. He was educated in classical forms of culture and also in modern literature, which can be inferred from his later literary production. Soldier, adventurer, passionate womanizer, Camões was in Africa and in the Portuguese East. He was involved in controversies and with married women, was imprisoned several times and produced one of the most important literary works in the framework of European literature at the time. «Os Lusíadas» is one of the most translated works of Portuguese literature and recognized as one of the most powerful and brilliant epics of European Renaissance literature. His lyrics and theatre are equally remarkable and unusual, and the letters a very valuable historical testimony.
