ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Horace Walpole

A man of letters, art historian, antiquarian, and liberal politician, Horace Walpole (1717-1797) left us a vast literary work, most notably his correspondence, published posthumously in forty-eight volumes, and The Castle of Otranto (1764), recognized as the first Gothic novel, whose supernatural and mysterious elements inspired authors such as Bram Stoker, Ann Radcliffe, and Mary Shelley. He studied at Eton College and in King CollegeHe was a member of the House of Commons in Cambridge. In Strawberry Hill, a neo-Gothic mansion he designed himself, he set up a printing press where he published his writings. His style broke with the literary canons of the time, and the stories presented here are... Hieroglyphic Tales They are an example of this.
