Ernesto Manuel Geraldes de Melo e Castro was born in the city of Covilhã in 1932. He graduated in Textile Engineering in Bradford, England, in 1956, and subsequently worked as a production technician in several factories and taught in technical education. He was also a professor of Textile Design at the Higher Institute of Art, Design and Marketing (IADE).
From 1982 onwards, he taught courses in Portuguese Literature in Brazil, and went on to obtain his doctorate in Letters from the University of São Paulo in 1998.
A theorist and practitioner of experimental poetry, Melo e Castro was one of those responsible for introducing this movement to Portugal.
He organized several poetry anthologies, most notably "Anthology of the Newest Portuguese Poetry" and "Anthology of Concrete Poetry in Portugal," and also authored essays on literature. He also contributed to various foreign and Portuguese literary magazines, such as "Tabacaria" and "Persona."
