Ernesto Manuel Geraldes de Melo e Castro nasceu na cidade da Covilhã, em 1932. Formou-se em Bradford, Inglaterra, em 1956, em Engenharia Têxtil, tendo mais tarde sido técnico de produção em várias fábricas e dado aulas no ensino tecnológico. Foi também professor de Design Têxtil no Instituto Superior de Arte, Design e Marketing (IADE).
A partir de 1982 deu cursos de Literatura Portuguesa no Brasil, tendo vindo a doutorar-se em Letras pela Universidade de São Paulo, em 1998.
Teórico e praticante da poesia experimental, Melo e Castro foi um dos responsáveis pela introdução deste movimento em Portugal.
Organizou várias antologias poéticas, das quais se destacam "Antologia da Novíssima Poesia Portuguesa" e "Antologia da Poesia Concreta em Portugal", sendo também autor de textos ensaísticos sobre literatura. Colaborou ainda com variadas revistas literárias estrangeiras e portuguesas, como por exemplo, "Tabacaria" e "Persona".
