ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lydia Cacho

Born in Mexico in 1963, she is one of the most famous investigative journalists in the world. After leaving the Sorbonne University, and influenced by the activism she inherited from her mother (a feminist psychologist of French and Portuguese descent), she embraced a career as a reporter.
For more than two decades, her unsettling and audacious voice has shaken the established powers in defense of women, denouncing sexual violence and exploitation. Among her works, which comprise nine titles, the following stand out. The Demons of Eden (2005), which led to her being arrested and tortured for revealing a pedophilia ring involving Mexican businessmen and politicians, and Slaves of Power, her most recent work. She works as a consultant specializing in human rights and women's health issues at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
She has been recognized with numerous awards from all corners of the world: most notably the National Journalism Award of Mexico, the Ginetta Sagan Award from Amnesty International in the name of Women's and Children's Rights (2007), the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Award (2008), the Wallenberg Medal (2009), Heroine of Press Freedom by the International Press Institute (2010) and Dame of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic (2013).
In 2011, he and Roberto Saviano won the Olof Palme Award for their fight against insecurity and injustice in the world.
