Pistis Sophia é um importante texto Gnóstico, cujo tema são os ensinamentos transmitidos por Jesus aos seus Apóstolos A sua autoria é atribuída a um teólogo gnóstico da época do cristianismo primitivo chamado Valentino (c 100 c 160 mas não há certezas.

O manuscrito foi descoberto no séc XVIII por um médico de Londres chamado A Askew sendo após a sua morte adquirido pelo British Museum.
Não é claro o significado do título, podendo ser traduzido por Sabedoria da Fé ou Sabedoria na Fé.

Aparece proclamado no texto que Jesus permaneceu no mundo, durante um período de onze anos após a sua ressurreição, e que foi durante esse hiato temporal que transmitiu aos seus discípulos diversos ensinamentos que os levariam até ao primeiro nível dos mistérios.

Descreve a descida e a ascensão da alma, apresenta as figuras importantes da tradição gnóstica finalizando com 32 desejos carnais que devem ser superados para que a salvação possa ser atingida.

George Robert Stowe Mead

G. R. S. Mead (1863-1933) was an influential member of the Theosophical Society. In addition to being an esotericist, he was also a writer, editor, and translator. He was responsible for translating the manuscript into English, from which the Portuguese translation was made. In his words: "In presenting the following translation to English-speaking readers, I must state that I would never have ventured into such an undertaking if some Coptic specialist had taken on this task, or if I had known that such a task was going to be carried out." Due to the importance of the text and the lack of a translation, he undertook this task with all his might.
