ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Daphne Du Maurier

In 1931, he published the novel Passionate, the first of more than two dozen she would publish throughout her career. She is primarily recognized for two stories, Rebecca (1938) and The Birds (1952), both adapted for film by Alfred Hitchcock. His novels are marked by the suggestion of supernatural elements, episodes imbued with the Gothic spirit, and rarely with happy endings. In 1969, for his undeniable contribution to English literature, he was appointed a Dame of the Order of the British Empire. He died at home in Cornwall in 1989.
