My Aunts’ Recipes

The book My Aunts’ Recipes - The food of Cabeço de Vide by M. Margarida Pereira-Müller tells the story of Cabeço de Vide, a small Alentejo town, and the story of the Alves Pereira family, with the family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Cabeço de Vide is known for its thermal waters. The historical centre of the town is in the cabeço, the top of the hill, after which the village is named.

The Alves Pereira family is known in the village as Alagoa, nickname received by the grandfather when he migrated from Castanheira de Pera to the Alentejo at the beginning of the 20th century to escape the monarchy police. Her grandmother was born in Camões estate. The family's recipes have survived to current generations, written in little papers and notebooks, which were found in a drawer of the old wooden kitchen table in the family home.
