ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nicholas Blake

Nicholas Blake is the pseudonym of the poet Cecil Day-Lewis. Born in Ireland in 1904, Day-Lewis grew up in London and graduated from Oxford University in 1927, publishing his first collection of poems in 1925. In order to supplement his income from his poetry, he worked as a teacher, literary critic, and editor, and in 1935, under the pseudonym Nicholas Blake, he published his first detective story. A Test Question...already starring the attractive detective Nigel Strangeways, who would appear in almost all twenty mystery novels that Blake would write. In 1968, Cecil Day-Lewis was named Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. He died in 1972 at the home of the writer Kingsley Amis, his friend.
