Agatha Christie was born Agatha May Clarissa Miller, in Torquay, Great Britain, in 1890. During World War I, she volunteered in a hospital, first as a nurse and then as a pharmacy and dispensary employee. This experience would prove to be fundamental, not only for the knowledge of the poisons and preparations that would appear in many of his books, but also for the very conception of his career in writing. With her second husband, the archaeologist Max Mallowan, Agatha would travel all over the world, actively participating in their archaeological excavations, never abandoning writing, nor letting go of the magnificent source of knowledge and inspiration that they represented.
Author of about 300 works (including mystery novels, poetry, radio and theater plays, short stories, documentaries, an autobiography and six novels published under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott), her talent and role in literature and the arts were officially recognized in 1956, the year in which she was awarded the title of Commander of the British Empire. In 1971, Queen Elizabeth II consecrated her with the title of Dame of the British Empire. Leaving behind a universal legacy celebrated in more than a hundred languages, the Queen of Crime, or Duchess of Death (as she preferred to be nicknamed), died on January 12, 1976. In 2000, the 31st Bouchercon World Mystery Convention awarded Agatha Christie two awards: she was considered the Best Crime Book Author of the 20th Century and the books starring Hercule Poirot the Best Crime Series of the same century.
